Assessment Overview

Teaching Strategies provides assessment materials for teachers of children from birth through prekindergarten. We believe teachers are decision makers in the classroom. Our materials are based on a solid foundation of scientific research and empower teachers to make good decisions. Good decision making is dependent upon a complete system that includes authentic, ongoing assessment.

We believe that assessing individual and group progress is the key to planning programs that respond to the needs, interests, and abilities of children in any classroom. With ongoing assessment, teachers can focus on all aspects of a child's development.

Assessment should be linked directly to the curriculum being used. Observation-based assessment enables you to

  • Use the goals and objectives of the curriculum to know what to teach
  • Evaluate children's learning and development
  • Use the information to guide children to the next step in development

The Creative Curriculum® Developmental Continuum

The Creative Curriculum® Developmental Continuum for Infants, Toddlers & Twos has 21 objectives that help teachers by providing a comprehensive picture of how children develop in four developmental areas: Social/Emotional, Physical, Cognitive, and Language.

The Creative Curriculum® Developmental Continuum for Ages 3-5 has 50 objectives. It is an effective way to focus your observations of children and document their progress in relation to the goals and objectives. This tool has been proven valid and reliable in a wide range of research studies.

Both The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum for Infants, Toddlers & Twos and The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum for Ages 3-5 are valid and reliable tools that use the goals and objectives of The Creative Curriculum®. They are road maps for determining where each child is developmentally, for following each child's progress, and for planning learning experiences. By linking curriciulum and assessment, teachers can use the information from ongoing strengths-based assessment to inform their teaching. Children benefit because teachers use what they learn from assessment to plan instruction. We provide both Web-based and paper materials as well as tools to support access to the general curriculum for children with disabilities.
