Product Overview

First Steps

The First Steps video training series teaches simple techniques that nurture children’s language development. From wonderfully entertaining scenes of infants and toddlers engaging with their families and caregivers, viewers learn how to strengthen young children’s communication skills gently and intentionally and to make the most of the critical early learning window.

Each DVD presents a complete 15- to 20-minute instructional video followed by interactive practice exercises that reinforce learning. Ideal for training home visitors, early intervention specialists, and parent trainers who work with children ages birth–3.

Volume 1: two 30-minute training videos, Viewer's and Facilitator's Guides

  • Beginning Language Connections reveals how adults' responsive interactions are a critical link in children's language learning processes.
  • Reading the Child's Message focuses on babies' and toddlers' nonverbal communication, with special attention to stress and special needs.

Volume 2: two 30-minute training videos, Viewer's and Facilitator's Guides

  • Talking With Young Children teaches how to use “Information Talk” to provide language for what a child is seeing, doing, thinking, or feeling.
  • Building Conversations models techniques for drawing children into the turn-taking rhythm of conversations, even when they are nonverbal.

Complete Set Includes: 2 DVDs (each about 60 minutes, subtitled); CD-ROM; Viewer's and Facilitator's Guides
