Hand-in-Hand presents a unique model for identifying children in the play environment who are missing out on learning, and therefore readily overlooked or labeled problematic. Skilled teachers demonstrate a new, reflective framework for observing and intervening that supports children who are shy or timid, act out in frustration or anger, or are unable to engage with materials or classmates.

This three-DVD series documents teachers as they build trust, teach negotiation skills, nurture self-esteem, and support children with varied needs and abilities in the midst of busy days. The Child Who Doesn't Play is the foundation for the series and looks at what happens when children can't take advantage of play opportunities. It presents basic information about play problems and their impact on children's lives. Each volume includes this video, plus two other videos. Ages 3-8. Produced by Educational Productions.

Volume 1:
Includes three 30-minute videos, Viewer's Guide, and Faciltator's Guide

The Child Who Doesn't Play and The Child Who Wanders introduce intervention strategies for children who wander--and miss out on learning--to make them feel more confident, focused, and involved. The Child Who Dabbles highlights subtle dabbling behaviors and shows how peer support and intervention encourage risk-taking and add depth and involvement to dabbler's play.

Volume 2:
Includes three 30-minute videos, Viewer's Guide, and Faciltator's Guide
The Child Who Doesn't Play and The Child Who Appears Anxious reinforce the importance of developing and maintain open communication with families, trusting relationships with children, and predictability and consistency in making children feel secure. The Child Who Appears Aloof demonstrates the relationship between social skills, self-esteem, and school success, and offers strategies to support interaction among children.

Volume 3:
Includes three 30-minute videos, Viewer's Guide, and Faciltator's Guide
The Child Who Doesn't Play and The Child Who Is Ignored demonstrate how to facilitate play, link children, and coach for effective communication. The Child Who Is Rejected pinpoints where these children need assistance and how to help them have meaningful interactions with classmates.
